Hiroshi Sugimoto: History of History
In a contemporary art scene preternaturally obsesed with sensation or spectacle, Japanese photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto's work registers like iridium—silvery, heavy, and rare. His methods and equipment, including a specially designed 8-x-10 large-format camera, recall photography's infant days and devices. Here, Sugimoto juxtaposes black-and-white photographs with items gleaned from his vast personal reliquary of East Asian art and objects. Ancient religious items and textiles are situated beside photos of wax-cast British monarchs and Cro-Magnons, entreating us to reconsider our linear conception of history. Oct 12th-Jan 6th at the Asian Art Museum
